Kitchen Renovations

Along with the basement we have decided to renovate the dated kitchen. We feel that it needs to be done at some point, so why not do it now and enjoy it! We decided to tackle the basement and kitchen at the same time and the contractor said it should take about 6-8 weeks. Everyone has told us to expect longer, but so far they are moving FAST and should be done on schedule. Below you will see the kitchen before and during demo. It is unbelievable the changes that have been made. We decided to tear out all the cabinets and rearrange the layout of the kitchen. The wall between the old kitchen and dining room has been completely removed and most of the wall between the dining room and family room has been removed as well. Also, the old entrance to the kitchen from the living room has been relocated next to the basement door. There will be a new layout for the new cabinets and also an island in the kitchen with the sink, dishwasher, and microwave. The old kitchen window above the sink is gone and will be a french door. Also, they had to remove the cast iron plumbing pipes in the kitchen ceiling in order to raise the ceiling up. The process so far has been good...the contractors are super nice and seem to be working quickly.

We have stayed with some good friends, The Staffords, for about 1 1/2 weeks over the past month. They have provided a dust-free place for us to sleep and we have also shared their oven for dinners many nights. God truly has blessed us with a great family that has been very generous sharing their home with us...we even have a Gator key to their house!

Enjoy the pictures! We will update the blog as soon as we have more pictures. The house changes every day!

Our antique kitchen with original cabinets and oven. Also note our old turquoise countertops.

Daddy and Ansley in our old kitchen. This is where we made pancakes and waffles every Saturday morning!

Our kitchen being demoed. We actually saved the old cabinets and countertops and donated them to a needy family whose kitchen was falling apart. We are excited that they went to another family! Take note of the trey ceiling that is going to be knocked out as well. The wall behind the guy where the cooktop use to be is going to be torn out too.

The old desk, oven, and floors are gone in this picture. Also note the old entrance to the kitchen on the right...the new entrance is where the refrigerator is.
Bryce and Stephen, one of the contractors, in the kitchen. The pergo floors have been removed in the kitchen, living room, and foyer.

The kitchen ceiling was removed. The old black pipes are going to be removed too.

Here are the old cabinets and green countertops sitting in our driveway...ready to be sent to a new home!

The ceiling, drywall, floors, and wall between the kitchen and old dining room are completely gone. Wow...what a difference!

"I need a snack...where's the kitchen?!?!?!?"

This is the front living room (to the left when you walk in the front door). The floors are gone and the entryway is covered with plastic so the dust won't get into the rest of the house...yeah right :)

This is the old kitchen...can you believe it! No more walls between the kitchen and dining room and family room. What a mess!!!!!

They cleaned up some! No more walls...it feels so open!

This is the foyer, right as you walk in the front door. When they removed the pergo, they found about 2 inches of cement where there had been tile before. When they removed the cement, the plywood was falling apart. If you stepped onto the wood, you would fall right into the basement. We had no access to the upstairs for the rest of the weekend. Thank goodness for great friends to stay with :)

Here are our new cabinets!!! They are solid wood and have to be assembled. The assembly is taking place in our living room. Joe is a very nice guy and great with wood work.

This is our kitchen looking in from the family room. Note the new opening on the left into the kitchen. This is where the old refrigerator was.

Our new granite! We went to the granite farm and picked out our slab. The choices in granite are absolutely beautiful!!

Another look at our new cabinets. This is the old dining room, which will soon be our eat-in kitchen. They also hung plastic here to keep the dust out of the family room.

Basement Renovations

It all began back in September 2009...the flood that struck Marietta and invaded the Turner house! Part of our basement was flooded. After pulling up some of the carpet we realized that the padding was soaked. We tried to tear up the padding and carpet, but ran into asbestos floor tiles. The haz-mat team was called in to remove all the flooring in the basement. We are now asbestos free! Next, Daddy, Mommy, Ansley and Bryce were called in to remove the lovely old desk against the wall and also all the yellow cabinets in the tool room. After those were removed a crew came in and removed all the walls in the basement...discovering mold everywhere! Another crew came in and treated the walls with three coats of mold remover and we are now mold-free!!!!

After all this ...in January we had a waterproofing company come in and put a trench system in the basement, a vapor barrier on the walls, and a sump pump to pump out any future water that may enter the basement. It has a lifetime guarantee!

Now it was time to start putting everything back to better than it was. Starting on February 8 we officially signed a contract to renovate our basement and decided to include our kitchen as well. Here are some pictures to show you the process of what has happened in the basement since the flood! Enjoy!

The old wall desk that had to be removed in order to get to the asbestos on the floors.

The old yellow cabinets in the tool room that also had to be removed.

Ansley helping with the demo. Look at those muscles!!

Bryce helping out too! We had some serious family bonding!

What a mess! This is the pile of desk and cabinets that we removed!

After pulling up a corner of the carpet in the basement, we found that the asbestos was crumbling and had to be removed. Yikes!!!!

Our new sump pump installed back by the "rock".

Ansley and Bryce put their hand and foot prints in the wet cement next to the sump pump.

Now the renovation begins! The framing has started!!!

We are putting a french door in the old storage room, which will now be Daddy's office! He can't wait to have his space back!!!

A look at our new cabinets for the kitchenette that will be in the basement where the old tool room was. The wall to make the tool room has been removed! There will be a pantry, countertop space, a sink, microwave, and refrigerator here!
More details on the basement to come...

The BIG Snow day!

Yesterday we had about 3" of snow!! It started snowing after Ansley got home from school and once it started it came down hard! It was absolutely BEAUTIFUL...the most snow I have seen in Atlanta. The kids (and Mommy and Daddy :) ) had fun building a snowman, sledding on our hill, and having a snowball fight! After all the cold weather we have had...it was fun to have snow to go with it! This morning we got up and everything was white outside!

Thomas the Train Weekend

For Bryce's birthday we went on a family trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee. The real Thomas the Train was there for the weekend! We went with Papa and Mimi on Saturday morning and came home Sunday.

Our trip started out with a huge storm. It was pouring down rain most of the way there. We were praying for it to stop raining since all of the Thomas events were outdoors. What do you know...it stopped raining 15 minutes before we got there! It only sprinkled for a couple minutes while we were visiting Thomas.

We actually got to see the REAL Thomas the Train!!! We have never seen Bryce so excited! The look on his face was priceless when Thomas came around the corner on the Train tracks! Our boy LOVES trains!!!!! We road the train, got a Thomas tattoo, played with many train sets, ate lunch, explored real train engines, saw a demonstration by Cranky the crane, and got to meet Sir Topham Hatt himself!!! We had a great time!

Saturday evening it was raining so we went to downtown Chattanooga and had a delighful dinner! After dinner we went to Baskin Robbins for ice cream cones...what fun!! Very messy for some! We also played in the water fountains coming out of the ground...in the rain! Papa and Mimi did too!!!

Sunday we woke up and wanted to go to Rock City and go hiking but it was raining, so we went to the Chattanooga Aquarium!

We had a very fun weekend!!

Bryce's 3rd Birthday

For Bryce's 3rd Birthday, we had a small "Scoop" construction party at home. He had 3 friends (Mallorie, Caryn amd Trent) and their families over to play. There has been some construction work going on in our neighborhood for several months and we asked if they couild park their "scoop"/excavator in our front yard for the weekend! Bryce was thrilled! We had a BBQ in the backyard and all the kids got to play. A good time was had by all!!
